Animal Welfare and Handling Policy

Pollo Tropical is committed to the humane treatment of the chickens supplied throughout our national system. It is our policy that our suppliers uphold responsible animal welfare practices and abide by, and exceed when possible, established industry and governmental standards as well as regulations pertaining to the humane treatment and handling of animals.

Our suppliers are required to meet the following standards as it relates to animal welfare.

  • All grow houses are climate, ventilation and light controlled.
  • Chickens are protected from elements and predators and are free to roam within the grow house free of cages.
  • Chickens are allowed full access to water and feed.

In addition, Pollo Tropical sources a designated breed of small bird that does not have the inherent health conditions associated with larger chickens.

We continue to review our policies regarding animal welfare and sourcing to ensure that we remain committed to the cause of social responsibility and community partnership. After reviewing the Joint Animal Protection Organization Statement on Broiler Chicken Welfare Issues and discussing with our suppliers their current practices and what advances can be made towards implementing changes in accordance to the broiler welfare policy, it is our commitment at Pollo Tropical to source only chickens certified by Global Animal Partnership (GAP) and require all chickens to be processed in a manner that avoids pre-stun handling and instead utilizes a multi-step controlled atmosphere processing system that induces an irreversible stun by 2024.

All Pollo Tropical suppliers are subject to ongoing facility audits and inspections by Pollo Tropical personnel, contracted Industry experts and third party animal welfare auditing certified by the Professional Animal Auditor Certification Organization (PAACO) or equivalent organization.
